Although known by many as the ‘king of the jungle’, African Lions mostly live in the transitional grasslands, or steppe, just south of Africa’s Sahara Desert. The lion diet is purely carnivorous, preying on a wide variety of animals. The females do all the hunting and raising of young in packs, - known as ‘prides’ - of up to 15 lions. Males are known for their iconic manes that beautifully encircle their necks for protection when fighting over food or females. Due to a population reduction of over half since the 1950’s, the African Lion is classified as threatened. Fewer than 21,000 remain in all of Africa.
