The American Mastodon had a thick shaggy coat of hair, much like the Woolly Mammoth. They were primarily 'browsers', meaning their diet consisted of nibbling on shrubs and the low-lying branches of trees. It is believed that American Mastodons lived a mostly solitary lifestyle and mainly gathered to breed. In 1705, in the town of Claverack, New York their existence was first found. A farmer discovered a fossilized tooth weighing 5 pounds and traded it to a politician that later gifted it to the New York governor.
