Tigers' distinctive striped coat, large size (up to 11 feet long!), and awesome power make this magnificent animal one of nature's most respected and famous creatures. Up until the Ice Age, the tiger's home was the frigid plains of Siberia. Today, much of the tiger population can be found in the swamps, grasslands, and jungles of Southeast Asia, China, Korea, and Russia. Unlike most cats, tigers are strong swimmers and can be found cooling off in shallow pools. Tigers have rarely been known to attack humans, but only when injured or threatened. Hunting and habitat loss has threatened the tiger nearly to the point of extinction. Only 3000 – 4000 wild tigers still remain on Earth.
