There are 11 different species of badger in existence, and three subspecies. For a long period, the most commonly known badgers were the white and black striped badgers of Western Europe. Now, thanks to a renewed internet fame, the Ratel badger or ‘honey badger’ is the most recognized species. Badgers can be fierce animals, willing to protect themselves and their young at any cost. Because of this, badgers have been known to repel everything from packs of wild dogs to venomous snakes, and have also been known to fight off bears! Ironically, badgers can also be quite docile in captivity, making great exotic pets.
