The bald eagle has been a symbol of freedom for the United States since 1782. The idea stemmed from a battle during the Revolutionary War. Early morning fighting disturbed a group, known as a 'convocation', of nearby bald eagles which then began circling overhead. This prompted fighters to proclaim the birds were “flying for freedomâ€, and the bald eagle has been the symbol for freedom in America ever since. 40 years ago, the bald eagle was hunted nearly to extinction. Amazingly, in 2007 the bald eagle was removed from the endangered species list due to significant population increases in the past decade thanks to national recovery efforts.
