Typically found in North America and Western Europe, beavers are most well-known for their river-diverting home building. Beavers use their large, flat-shaped tails to help build their homes, called ‘dams’ from twigs, sticks, leaves, and mud. Today in the US, the hunting and trapping of the beaver is controlled federally to maintain a balance in population. Because of this, the American beaver has made a good recovery in population from previous lows. Due to a lack of regulation worldwide, beaver species in other regions of the globe have not recovered as well, but there is still time.
