Coatimundis, or “Coati” for short, are members of the raccoon family, but unlike raccoons, Coatis are diurnal, meaning they are awake mostly during the day. There are four different types of coatimundi, all of which live in South America or Mexico. Living in groups of 10-30 females called ‘bands,’ young are raised by a community of mothers, grandmothers, and aunts. Male coatis are solitary, only interacting with a group during mating season.
