While you may not have heard of the colon, you've most likely heard of the 'larger' organ it is a part of, the large intestine. Divided into four sections, the colon's main function in the body is to extract water from excretory waste passing through. The body must squeeze out as much water as it can, and the colon is the last line of defense to soak up all available water before excretion. Ironically, the small intestine is actually longer than the colon, or large intestine. The colon is wider, however, which is how it got the name 'large' intestine.
