The coyote is native to prairie lands in North and Central America. Because they are most often seen on the open prairies, coyotes have also been called the 'prairie wolf'. The coyote is a species all their own, however, differing significantly from wolf lineages. Coyotes typically weigh in at 15-40 pounds, but are still powerful animals that can run at speeds of up to 40 mph for extended periods and can jump up to 13 feet high! Human habitat and prey encroachment has forced coyotes to hunt more and more in suburban areas, sometimes threatening house pets. Unfortunately, with constant human encroachment, it is the coyote who has the potential to be threatened.
