The elk is one of the largest species of the deer family in the world, found typically in western North America and eastern Asia. Elk were once found across much of North America, but due to hunting and habitat loss, have been forced to take refuge in more remote locations. Today, elk can usually be found in the mountainous, western landscapes of the US such as Wyoming’s National Elk Refuge and Yellowstone National Park. Today, elk number approx. 1M in North America.
