The Hippopotamus is a large, herbivorous mammal that lives in sub-Saharan Africa. They are semi-aquatic, inhabiting rivers, lakes, and swamps. During the day they remain cool by lounging underwater or in mud. They emerge at dusk to graze on grasses. The Hippo is among the largest living land mammals, with a recorded length of over 13 foot long and an average weight of over 3,000 pounds. One exceptional male was even reported weighing almost 6,000 pounds! Despite this enormous weight and stocky legs, the hippo can sprint up to 19 mph over short distances.
