Horned Lizard

Thanks to a squat, flat head with a pointed nose and mouth, the short-horned lizard is often referred to as the ‘horned toad’ or ‘horny toad.’ Typically a reddish-tan with brown spots, the short-horned lizard most famously sports a crown and torso of small, sharp horns and spines. Despite the pointy exterior, short-horned lizards are preyed upon by a variety of animals including hawks and coyotes. On the flip side, short-horned lizards mostly prey on ants that happen to wander into their paths.
