Howling Wolf

Many refer to the wolf as the 'ice age survivor.' The red wolf is one of two indigenous wolf species in North America. Typically smaller than the gray wolf, the red wolf historically inhabited wetland areas of the southeastern United States. It was believed to have gone extinct in the early 20th century, but thanks to a captive breeding program, the red wolf was reintroduced back to the wild, first in North Carolina. Today there are about 300 red wolves remaining on Earth, 200 of which are in captivity, leading to a 'threatened' classification.
