Humpbacks generally stay near the coasts, often coming very close inshore. They have even been known to swim into small bays. Humpbacks will sometimes leap completely out of the water and flip over and over. They will make loud slapping sounds with their extremely long flippers. The often heavily barnacled encrusted humpback can be found in all the oceans; they migrate from the warmer tropical waters which are their mating waters, to the polar waters for the summer.
