Megalodon, meaning 'big tooth' in Ancient Greek, was a massive shark that lived approximately 16 to 2.6 million years ago. Fossil records suggest this giant shark was related to the modern Great White Shark, and could reach lengths of up to 60 feet long! Regarded as one of the largest and most powerful predators in history, the Megalodon had enough adaptability to inhabit a wide range of marine environments. It is possible the species lived in all of the Earth's oceans at its peak. Oceanic cooling, a sharp decline in food supply, and competition from Killer Whales are possible explanations for the Megalodon's extinction.
