The North American moose is the largest member of the deer family. Female moose, known as 'cows', typically stand 5-6 feet tall at the shoulder and weigh between 500 and 1000 pounds. Attracted to mountain meadows and dense mountain forests, moose mostly inhabit the temperate, subarctic regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Although female moose lack the trademark broad, palm-shaped antlers of their male counterparts, females still retain the distinctively long snout and drooping upper lip for which the species is known.
