Mountain Gorilla

The Western Gorilla and the Mountain Gorilla are both endangered. These gentle giants have only one true enemy – humans. For years they were hunted for souvenir body parts and for medicinal ingredients. Now their biggest threats are from deforestation and political red tape. Adult males develop white patches on their backs. These dominant males are called silver-backs and can stand up to six feet and weight as much as 500 pounds. Gorillas are one of the three species of great apes. These three are among the most socially developed primates.
