Widely accepted as a wild horse, Mustangs are actually more accurately described as feral. This is attributed to their ancestry being based in domesticated horses introduced by Spanish settlers. While introduced by the Spanish, Mustangs have since cross-bred with any number of other horses. This genetic cocktail makes for a wide variety of characteristics, including color and physical attributes, with the exception of size, as most maintain a size between 14–15 hands, or 56–60 inches.
