The Polar Bear is a large species of bear that inhabits the ice fields in the Arctic Ocean. Polar Bears are one of the few mammals found in these hostile conditions and have adapted to life on the ice. Their thick, dense fur sits atop a thick layer of blubber and is made up of a warm undercoat and longer guard-hairs that help trap in heat. It's these transparent guard-hairs that make Polar Bears appear white. Polar Bears are also strong and capable swimmers that have been spotted up to 100 miles from the closest ice or land. This swimming ability has given them the scientific name, 'Maritime Bear'. Due to global climate change, the Polar Bears' habitat and population is quickly vanishing, relegating them to a 'threatened'. endangered status.
