The North American river otter is known as a very playful and social animal. Able to communicate using sound and smell, river otters produce a large variety of grunts, chirps, growls, and whistles. They can also warn other otters of danger by secreting musk from specialized scent glands. Their most unique physical feature is their luxurious coat, which repels water while simultaneously regulating body temperature. Although they are mammals, river otters spend most of their lives in the water, which makes them especially susceptible to any pollution dumped upstream. Significant re-population efforts have brought the North American River Otter back from the brink of extinction to once again fall under the 'least concern' classification of endangerment.
