Tibet Calendar

The Tibetan calendar is a dating system based on a cycle of 60 Tibetan years. The Tibetan year is composed of either 12 or 13 lunar months, each beginning and ending with a new moon. Therefore, the first day of each month coincides with the New Moon and the 15th day with the Full Moon. A thirteenth month is added every two or three years, so that an average Tibetan year is equal to the solar year. The written Tibetan calendar shows a month of 30 days; to reconcile this with the 29 1/2-day cycle of phases of the Moon, the number of days in six of the months is 29.
